Apple has introduced the new AirTag, an accessory that helps users keep track of important items using the Find My app. The latest AirTagoffers a wider range and a louder speaker. With support from the Find My network, AirTag helps people keep an eye on their belongings every day. Since its launch in 2021, users have shared stories about finding lost luggage, keys, bikes, and more. For example, a musician found a lost instrument in time for a performance, and another person recovered luggage with vital medication. AirTag is made for tracking objects and includes strong protection against unwanted tracking. It is available now at the same price as before, $29 for one and/or $99 for a 4-pack with free personalized engraving on Apple.com and the Apple Store app.
Enhanced Range and Findability
The new AirTag uses Apple’s second-generation ultra-wideband chip, which is also in the iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air, Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch Series 11. This makes it easier to find lost items. Precision finding uses haptic, visual, and audio feedback to guide users to their items from up to 50% farther away than before. The improved Bluetooth chip also increases the range. For the first time, users can use Precision Finding on Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later. Making it easier to find an AirTag from their wrist.
The new AirTag is 50% louder than the previous version, so that users can hear it from twice as far away with upgraded precision findings and a new chime. It is now easier to find important items like keys lost in the couch or a wallet before leaving home.
The Find My Network and Share Item Location
Find My helps users locate AirTag, Apple devices, and compatible third-party devices while also keeping up with family and friends and protecting privacy. If an AirTag is out of range of its paired phone, the Find My network can help find it. This network uses Apple devices with Bluetooth to detect and report the location of accessories or devices to their owners.
The new AirTag works with Share Item Location. This iOS feature lets users temporarily and securely share an item’s location with trusted third parties, such as airlines, to help locate delayed luggage or other lost items. Apple has partnered with over 50 airlines to privately and securely accept these links.
With Share Item Location, users can share the location of misplaced items with a participating airline’s customer service team. According to SITA, a leading IT provider for airlines, using Share Item Location has reduced baggage delays by 26% and incidences of truly lost or unrecoverable luggage by 90%. Access is granted only to approved personnel via secure Apple account or partner authentication. The shared location will be turned off as soon as a user reunites with their item, can be stopped by the owner at any time, and will automatically expire after 7 days.
Industry-Leading Security Features
The new AirTag is designed from the ground up to keep location data private and secure. AirTag doesn’t physically store location data or history on the device, and end-to-end encryption protects all communication with the Find My Network, making certain that the owner of an AirTag can access its location data. No one, including Apple, knows the identity or location of any device that helped find it. Designed exclusively for tracking objects and not people or pets, the new AirTag incorporates a suite of industry-first protections against unwanted tracking, including cross-platform alerts and unique Bluetooth identifiers that change frequently.
Environmental Accountability And Accessory Compatibility
Apple 2030 is the company’s plan to be carbon neutral across its entire business by the end of the decade, focusing on reducing emissions from materials, electricity, and transportation.
The new AirTag uses:
- 85% recycled plastic in its enclosure
- 100% recycled rare earth elements in all magnets
- 100% recycled gold plating in Apple-designed circuit boards
Paper packaging is made entirely from fiber and is easy to recycle. The new AirTag retains the same shape as the original and works with all existing AirTag accessories, including the fine woven keyring, which is made from 68% recycled content and comes in five colors.
