In February 2026, the US Department of War, previously known as the Pentagon, announced it would add a secure customized version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT to its Enterprise AI Platform.

The Genai.mil platform aims to speed up operations, enhance decision-making, and modernize administrative processes for three million military and civilian staff.

Adding ChatGPT to the Genai.mil platform, launched in December 2025, represents a move toward an AI-first approach that prioritizes speed and data security.

The Department of War chose to add ChatGPT to Genai.mil for several reasons:

Upgraded Operational Readiness and Capability

Integrating ChatGPT helps boost the efficiency of military personnel by automating, summarizing, and analyzing information.

  • Administrative Effectiveness: ChatGPT helps draft procurement and contracting documents, prepares internal reports, and makes compliance checklists.
  • Speed in Decision-Making: The tool summarizes policy and guidance documents, enabling faster conversion of orders and briefs into clear plans.
  • Operational support: It helps you with research, planning, and daily administrative tasks for the joint force.

A Secure Environment

OpenAI’s ChatGPT runs in a secure, specialized environment designed to prevent data leaks.

  • Unclassified but sensitive data: The custom ChatGPT on Genai.mil is cleared for controlled unclassified information. Data processed within Genai.mil is not used to train or improve OpenAI’s public models. This ensures that military research and planning data remain under government control.

Keeping Ahead in Technology

The Department of Work believes that quickly adopting AI is needed to stay competitive.

  • AI First Strategy: This move supports the AI acceleration strategy to make advanced AI tools part of everyday military work.
  • Aggressive Fielding: The Department of War is quickly rolling out AI technology to help the US maintain an edge in areas like long-range drones, autonomous systems, and hypersonic weapons.

Strength and Reliability: The Genai.mil platform aims to be a trusted AI environment with 100% uptime.

  • Guard rails and safety: the custom version has content guard rails and a safety system, plus red teaming to make it more reliable for military use.
  • Tool sprawl reduction: By bringing top AI models like Gemini, ChatGPT, and soon Grok onto one platform, the Department of War is making it easier for staff to use advanced AI tools.

In line with White House AI mandates, this rollout aligns with the White House AI Action Plan and brings generative AI to all military branches.

  • No classified data: The current ChatGPT on Genai.mil is only used for unclassified work.
  • Safety Concerns: Specialists caution that relying too heavily on AI in high-stakes military situations could lead to errors, underscoring the importance of human oversight.

The following articles explain how ChatGPT was securely added to the Pentagon’s Genai.mil platform and the benefits it brings.

Today, OpenAI for Government is announcing the next step in our National Security Network: we are bringing ChatGPT to Genai.mil, the Department of War’s secure AI platform used by 3 million civilian and military personnel.

By joining other leading AI labs on Genai.mil, we are building on our work with the Pentagon. This includes our cooperation with DARPA to support cyber defenders, as well as a pilot program with the department’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office, announced earlier this year, that explores how advanced AI can improve Pentagon operations.

Those who defend the country should have the best tools available. The United States and other democracies need to see how, with suitable safeguards, AI can help protect people, deter threats, and prevent conflict. That’s why we are bringing Charge GPT to Genai.mil to give American service members reliable AI tools built to high standards. Our goal is to help governments use AI safely and effectively. By joining efforts like Genai.mil, we help set the standards for how AI is used across government.

Deploying a Custom Version of ChatGPT on GenAI.mil

OpenAI will launch a custom version of ChatGPT on Genai.mil, approved for the department’s unclassified work. The system operates in authorized government cloud infrastructure with safety controls and protections for sensitive data, giving teams secure access to generative AI.

ChatGPT is built to help with daily tasks that support readiness and mission execution for American service members, such as:

  • Summarizing and analyzing policy and guidance documents.
  • Drafting and reviewing procurement and contracting materials
  • Generating Internal Reports and Compliance Checklists
  • Supporting a wide variety of research, planning, mission support, and administrative workflows

Securely designed for the Department of War

  • The models on Genai.mil will include safeguards at both the model and platform levels to ensure the system is stable and dependable, supporting all lawful uses.
  • Data processed on Genai.mil stays within the government environment and is not used to train or improve OpenAI’s public or commercial models. This keeps it separate from external systems and protects mission data.

This effort shows our overall approach to government work: focused, practical, safety first, and based on realistic needs.
