Science fiction has long imagined computers with adaptable, foldable screens. Samsung is now pursuing this concept to define the future of smartphones.

The new Samsung Galaxy Z Trifold folds in two places like a brochure, allowing a large screen to fit into your pocket.

Samsung unveiled the device to the press at CES in Las Vegas ahead of its upcoming U.S. release following a limited launch in South Korea. While the concept is promising, it comes with typical early-stage compromises.

The Samsung foldable phone is slim when used as a tablet, but bulky when used as a phone. It will likely be priced too high for most early adopters and average consumers (Samsung has not announced pricing; the Galaxy Z Fold 7 features a smaller screen, and a single fold starts at $2,000).

Extensive adoption may not be the primary goal, as the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, Samsung, aims to demonstrate that smartphones still have significant possibilities for innovation. Liz Lee, associate director at Counterpoint Research, described the Trifold smartphone as a strategic pilot to measure consumer response to new technology.”

Given Samsung’s leadership in the smartphone market and the trend of other Android brands adopting foldable designs, even niche products like the Trifold can influence industry direction.

A Giant Screen In Your Pocket

What makes the Z Trifold unique is that Samsung designed it to offer a screen that expands for use and contracts for portability, building on the moderate success of the Galaxy Z Fold series.

The Trifold features a 10-inch screen that folds in two places, while the Galaxy Z Fold 7 offers an 8-inch screen that folds once.

Samsung states the new phone targets users who prioritize work and productivity.

The Galaxy Z Trifold supports split-screen mode. It allows apps to function as resizable, movable desktop windows. When paired with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, it can serve as a compact laptop alternative, giving users an indication of how it compares to the Galaxy Z Fold.

More Splash Than Function For Now

However, expectations could be tempered. The device is nearly paper-thin when it opens. It feels as thick as two stacked phones when closed.

Samsung appears to have made more progress with the Galaxy Z Trifold than with earlier folding smartphones. Previous generations often featured lower-quality cameras, a prominent center of crease, and other issues. Samsung’s latest Galaxy S25 Ultra has cameras similar to those on its top-of-the-line Galaxy S25 Ultra, so users do not have to compromise. Samsung has improved camera quality for larger screens. Although the two screen creases are visible, they are not too distracting. Consumers need to carry around larger screens. Aside from viewing more apps at once and having a larger surface for reading and watching videos, tasks that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 can already do, the Trifold doesn’t offer much that’s unique compared to a standard smartphone.

Foldable phones have yet to achieve mainstream success. Samsung’s models have seen slow uptake, and foldables remain a small part of the smartphone market.

Foldable phones, such as the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold, are priced above the average smartphone. The higher price point can discourage wider adoption, as most U.S. consumers purchase new phones only when replacements are necessary, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, which tracks Americans’ technology spending.

Regardless of consumer demand, the foldable phone trend appears to be enduring. This persistence complements Samsung’s broadest strategy by ensuring nearly all major Android manufacturers now offer foldable phones, and Apple is expected to introduce its first later this year. Samsung can better assess which formats resonate with consumers and adapt its offerings accordingly.

This approach aligns with Samsung’s broader strategy to offer a variety of phone designs, leveraging the ongoing industry trend to evaluate which formats resonate with consumers.

I think the exciting part is getting it out into the wild and then ultimately seeing which form factors different users are attracted to. Drew Blackard, senior vice president of mobile conduct management at Samsung Electronics America, told CNN in September, ahead of the phones’ introduction. “So, I think you will only see an evolution from here of what we can do,”
