The FBI has arrested an Albany, New York, woman in connection with an alleged ISIS-inspired plot to bomb the New York State Capitol, authorities announced on August 20, 2026. The arrest, the result of a months-long undercover operation, prevented what could have been one of the most devastating domestic terror attacks in recent American history.
According to federal prosecutors, the suspect — whose identity has not been fully disclosed pending formal charges — came to the FBI's attention through online communications in which she expressed support for the Islamic State and discussed plans to carry out an attack on U.S. soil. What she did not know was that the individuals she was communicating with were undercover FBI agents posing as ISIS facilitators.
"She Sought Help With Explosives"
Court documents reveal that the suspect went beyond mere online rhetoric. She allegedly spoke in detail about attack plans, scouted locations around the Capitol complex in Albany, and actively sought assistance in acquiring explosives and building a device. The undercover agents, maintaining their cover, engaged her in conversations designed to assess the seriousness of the threat and gather evidence for prosecution.
"This was not someone venting on the internet," said a senior FBI official familiar with the investigation. "She took concrete steps. She conducted surveillance. She asked for help with explosives. This was a real threat, and we treated it as such."
The arrest was carried out without incident at the suspect's Albany residence. Federal agents executed a search warrant and reportedly recovered materials consistent with the early stages of explosive device construction, though officials emphasized that no completed bomb was found.
A Pattern of Homegrown Threats
The Albany plot is the latest in a troubling pattern of homegrown extremism that has kept federal law enforcement on high alert throughout 2026. New York Governor Kathy Hochul praised the FBI and state law enforcement for their coordination in thwarting the plot.
